San Diego State Lacrosse Kicks Off 2025 Season with a Bang!

In the heart of Pontiac, Michigan, San Diego State University’s lacrosse team made a thunderous entrance into the 2025 season, showing off their skills in a dazzling display against Detroit Mercy. The Aztecs soared to a commanding 17-5 victory, leaving fans buzzing with excitement and pride.

The Game Overview

The atmosphere at the UWM Sports Complex was electric as the Aztecs took the field. From the moment the whistle blew, it was clear that San Diego State came ready to play. Just five minutes into the game, junior transfer Matty Spaeth made her mark by scoring the very first goal for SDSU, setting the tone for what would be an exhilarating afternoon.

Standout Players Shine Bright

Among the stars of the match was Frankie Garcia, whose performance lit up the scoreboard like a fireworks show. Garcia netted an incredible six goals, a personal best that secured her place in the record books as the sixth-most goals scored in a single game by an Aztec! While she tied with five other impressive athletes from SDSU’s history, the coveted record of eight goals in a game still belongs to Deanna Balsama.

Not to be outdone, redshirt freshman Bella Tan also made her presence felt, contributing three goals to the team’s tally. Veteran leadership was on display as well, with Kate Christos adding two goals to the mix. Meanwhile, Sara Toner, Talie Richardson, and Nikki Seven all pitched in with one goal each to round out the team’s scoring spree.

Team Play and Strategy

SDSU demonstrated remarkable teamwork and strategy throughout the game, taking a whopping 46 shots on goal and successfully converting 17 of those into points. They displayed impressive synergy, with four of their goals being assisted—Toner leading the way with a pair of assists, supported by Christos and Keira Doyle-Odenbach each providing a helping hand.

Defensively, the Aztecs were a well-oiled machine, forcing 17 turnovers while limiting Detroit Mercy to just 18 shots on goal. This strong defensive effort was complemented by a commanding lead in ground balls, with San Diego State snatching 23 compared to their opponents’ mere 11. The Aztecs also controlled the draw by securing 15 draw controls against the Titans’ 10, indicating their dominance on both ends of the field.

A Young and Talented Roster

This season, the Aztecs boasted a diverse roster, with a total of 25 players taking to the field, including nine freshmen and three transfers. The starting lineup was a testament to the team’s commitment to future talent, featuring true freshmen Keira Doyle-Odenbach and Maya Tillman along with redshirt freshmen Bella Tan and Sophia Miller.

Looking Ahead

With this resounding victory under their belts, the San Diego State lacrosse team is gearing up for their next challenge against Eastern Michigan, which is set to take place on Sunday at 9 a.m. PT. The Aztecs are eager to keep this momentum rolling as they continue their journey through the season.

As the buzz from the game circulates through the community, there’s no doubt that fans are excited to see how this dynamic team will develop over the coming weeks. With talent, determination, and the thrill of victory driving them, San Diego State lacrosse is definitely a team to watch in 2025!
