News Summary

As severe storms approach Metro Detroit, residents are urged to prepare for high winds and heavy rainfall. Gusts may reach up to 60 mph, and local utility DTE Energy is mobilizing additional workers to address potential power outages. Flood warnings are in effect for several communities, as previous rain has led to flooding, and additional rain is anticipated. With residents bracing for disruptions, safety and preparedness are critical as storms sweep through the area.

Storms Brewing over Metro Detroit

As the clock ticks toward midnight, winds are ramping up across Metro Detroit with forecasts predicting gusts that could reach a staggering 60 miles per hour. People are bracing for what could be a wild night ahead, with meteorologists warning that a line of storms is set to sweep through the area within just a few hours. Residents are urged to prepare for possible interruptions as this severe weather system makes its way through.

Power Down Expected

In anticipation of these volatile conditions, DTE Energy is taking no chances. Officials have mobilized thousands of line workers and even brought in 650 additional workers from other states to address any widespread power outages that may arise. With early reports showing that over a thousand customers had already lost power by 10:40 p.m., the utility company is gearing up for tens of thousands more to be affected as the storms progress into the night.

Winds, Rain, and Flooding

The local weather has not been quiet leading up to these storms. Just before the winds kicked into high gear, areas of Metro Detroit experienced around 1.7 inches of rain, while some spots in Allegan County saw nearly 2.89 inches. This heavy rainfall has already led to road closures in several parts of the Kalamazoo area due to flooding. Residents should remain on high alert as a flood watch is in effect, and additional rain could fall on Thursday.

What to Expect

Surrounding communities, such as Macomb, Oakland, Washtenaw, and Wayne Counties, have been issued flood warnings lasting until 7 a.m. Thursday. With the storm’s onslaught, these areas may feel the pressure as water levels rise. DTE has emphasized their commitment to restoring power as swiftly and safely as possible, yet challenges lie ahead with the storm impacting power restoration efforts.

Recent Storm Impact

This storm comes hot on the heels of another dramatic weather event just a few days prior, when an earlier storm left about 85,000 DTE customers without power. Impressively, around 97% of the restoration was completed in just 24 hours. However, customers are likely feeling a sense of déjà vu as the winds pick up once more.

Waterways at Risk

Rainfall from Wednesday also contributed to combined sewage discharges into local bodies of water, including the Rouge River and the Trenton Channel of the Detroit River. Thankfully, officials are monitoring the situation closely. The George W. Kuhn Retention Treatment Facility is operating normally, while staff remain onsite to ensure everything is under control. Macomb County is also keeping tabs on two retention treatment basins that are currently managing inflows from the ongoing rain.

Looking Ahead

As we enter the night, everyone should stay informed and prepare for what could be a turbulent evening. With the winds howling and storms on the horizon, extending vigilance throughout Metro Detroit is quite essential in the coming hours. Should the power go out or roads become impassable, residents are reminded to stay safe and maintain a level head. Let’s weather the storm together, Metro Detroit!
