Detroit Man Charged After Cold Cases Resurface

In an eye-opening turn of events, a 51-year-old Detroit man, Akida Diaba Dudley, has been charged with multiple sexual assaults that date back nearly three decades. This case serves as a haunting reminder of how pivotal advancements in forensic science can bring long-sought justice to victims.

The Arrest and Charges

Dudley was taken into custody on April 14, 2025, after untested rape kits linked him to three sexual assaults that occurred between 1997 and 2004. He now faces several serious charges, including three counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and three counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct. His arrest comes after a thorough investigation by the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office Sexual Assault Kit Task Force.

The Victim Stories

The allegations against Dudley are deeply disturbing and relate to three courageous victims:

  • The first victim, a 30-year-old woman, was abducted at knifepoint on June 9, 1997. While waiting for a bus near Grand River and West Warren avenues, she was forced into Dudley’s car, taken to a secluded location, sexually assaulted, and then left in minimal clothing.
  • The second victim was just a 16-year-old girl, who was approached at a bus stop on September 22, 1997. After accepting a ride from Dudley, he allegedly threatened her with an ice pick and assaulted her when she resisted his advances.
  • Finally, an 18-year-old woman was also coerced into Dudley’s vehicle at knifepoint on August 9, 2004. She faced a horrifying ordeal as she was driven to an unknown location, assaulted, and then dropped off on Seven Mile Road.

All three women had sexual assault kits taken at the time of the incidents, but unfortunately, they remained untested until recent investigations revealed the shocking backlog of unprocessed evidence.

Turning Point in a Cold Case

The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office has been tirelessly working on these types of cases for 16 years. In 2009, over 11,000 untested sexual assault kits were discovered in a Detroit Police Department storage facility. Thanks to the efforts of the Sexual Assault Kit Task Force, these cases are finally getting the attention they deserved, bringing hope for justice to many survivors.

The Legal Process Ahead

Dudley has been denied bond and is currently in custody, pending a probable cause conference scheduled for April 28, 2025. If convicted of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, he could face up to life in prison, and even up to 15 years for each count of third-degree criminal sexual conduct. The legal team is building a strong case, and it’s clear that the ramifications for Dudley could be serious.

For Survivors and Others Affected

The investigation doesn’t end here. Authorities are actively seeking to uncover whether there are other potential victims of Dudley. If anyone has experienced similar aggressions or knows someone who may have, they are urged to come forward and contact the Wayne County Sexual Assault Kit Task Force at 313-224-2782. This call could be a significant step toward healing and justice.

As the story unfolds, the hope is that this pivotal case serves as a reminder of the importance of believing survivors and the ongoing need to process and investigate all untested evidence. Every kit represents a story, and the courage of the victims is now finding its voice. As they say, justice may be late, but it must never be denied.
