The courtroom setting where Desmond Burks' trial will take place.
Desmond Burks has been declared competent to stand trial for the murders of Dr. Devon Hoover and Reda Saleh. Facing serious charges including first-degree murder, Burks’ alleged actions have left a community in shock. A competency hearing confirmed his ability to proceed to trial, with preliminary exam dates for both cases expected soon. The families of the victims seek justice as the legal proceedings unfold.
In a shocking series of events, Desmond Burks, a 34-year-old man, has been declared competent to stand trial for the alleged murders of two individuals, neurosurgeon Dr. Devon Hoover and 67-year-old Reda Saleh. The Michigan Center for Forensic Psychiatry initially deemed Burks competent in December 2024 and following an independent evaluation requested by Burks’ attorney, Gabi Silver, the results confirmed this assessment.
Burks is facing serious charges that include first-degree premeditated murder, felony murder, and larceny of property exceeding $20,000. Additionally, he stands accused of using a computer to commit a crime and possessing a firearm as a felon. The list does not stop there, as he is looking at three counts for felony firearm possession as a second offense. The weight of these accusations paints a troubling picture of Burks’ alleged actions.
The first and perhaps most shocking case revolves around the death of Dr. Devon Hoover, a respected 53-year-old neurosurgeon. He was discovered dead in his home on April 23, 2023, in a particularly disturbing manner; he had been wrapped in a comforter, a sheet, and carpet, after being shot twice in the back of the head. The investigation revealed that an estimated $30,000, a Range Rover, and two expensive watches were reported missing from his residence.
It appeared that Burks and Dr. Hoover had more than just a casual relationship, with evidence surfacing that they engaged in intimate encounters, including Burks occasionally charging Hoover for sexual services. Before the unfortunate incident, over 4,000 text messages exchanged between the two showed a complex relationship. Moreover, shortly after Hoover’s untimely death, reports of fraudulent transactions began appearing on his bank accounts.
Interestingly, Burks was initially arrested just five days after Hoover’s death but was released three days later without any charges. Despite his release, police were keeping a close eye on him, having identified him as the primary suspect. As the investigation unfolded, Burks was apprehended again in May 2024, but this time, his troubles escalated with another murder charge linked to the death of Reda Saleh.
Saleh’s tragic death occurred after a road rage incident on April 17, 2024, where Burks allegedly punched him during a heated argument after a minor bump between their vehicles. This confrontation left Saleh unresponsive in the street, and he later succumbed to his injuries.
The families of the victims have been vocal in their belief that Burks was the murderer in both cases from the start. Their anguish and sense of betrayal have reverberated throughout the community, illuminating the dark cloud hanging over these tragedies.
A competency hearing for both cases took place on March 7, 2025, and with the finding of Burks’ competency, preliminary exam dates for both murder cases are anticipated to be scheduled soon. This means that the wheels of justice are beginning to turn, and the forthcoming trials promise to shed more light on the shocking events surrounding these two tragic deaths.
As the community continues to grapple with the fallout from these allegations, it’s clear that people are eager for answers and some form of closure. The upcoming trials should provide a platform for justice to be served, although the scars of these incidents will likely remain for some time.
