Community meeting discussing animal welfare and issues related to kitten rescue in Detroit.

News Summary

Brandon Lee Dwayne Littke, 25, was arrested for throwing two kittens from his SUV in Detroit, leading to serious legal charges. One kitten was killed, while the other was rescued and is now healthy. The case highlights significant concerns over animal cruelty in the city.

Detroit – Brandon Lee Dwayne Littke, a 25-year-old resident of Redford, has been taken into custody for allegedly throwing two kittens from his SUV at a gas station in Detroit. The incident transpired on April 21 at approximately 11:30 a.m. at a BP gas station located at the intersection of Grand River and 7 Mile.

Littke now faces serious legal consequences, including three felony charges: one count of killing or torturing animals and two counts of abandoning animals. Surveillance footage from the gas station documented one of the kittens being struck by Littke’s vehicle, resulting in its death.

The surviving kitten, which has since been named Diesel, was discovered a few hours later by a woman named Andreina Delfin. Delfin found Diesel hiding behind an ice box at the gas station and subsequently rescued him. Diesel is now in the care of Michigan Humane and is reported to be in perfect health.

The investigation that led to Littke’s arrest was coordinated using license plate readers from two cities. This technology allowed authorities to identify him as a suspect in the case. Littke was apprehended on April 24 and was arraigned in the 36th District Court in Detroit on April 27. Following his arraignment, he was released on a $25,000 personal bond.

Littke maintains that the kittens were unintentionally thrown from his vehicle. However, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has publicly condemned his actions, asserting that they are “criminal and not acceptable on any level.”

Prior to this incident, Littke had a criminal record, including a robbery charge, but he had no previous allegations related to animal cruelty. If convicted, he faces substantial penalties: up to four years in prison and a $5,000 fine for the animal killing charge, as well as up to one year in jail and a $2,000 fine for each of the abandonment charges.

A probable cause hearing is scheduled to take place on May 7, with a preliminary examination following on May 14. The details of this case have sparked a broader conversation around animal cruelty concerns in Detroit, as communities rally for greater awareness and action against such offenses.

This incident has not only highlighted issues of animal welfare in the city but has also uncovered the need for stronger measures to prevent future acts of animal cruelty. The authorities and animal welfare organizations are urging citizens to report suspected cases of animal abuse and take part in safeguarding the rights and well-being of animals in their communities.
