Originally set to kick off this weekend, the bridge demolition that would have closed parts of I-94 has been postponed due to some unavoidable equipment hiccups.

What Was Supposed to Happen?

If everything had gone according to plan, starting at 8 p.m. on Friday, March 28, 2025, motorists would have faced some major changes as the closure was set to stretch all the way between I-75 and Gratiot Avenue (M-3). The overpass, which has been a fixture of Detroit traffic since it was built in 1957, was badly in need of a makeover. Following concerns about its poor structural conditions, it was closed last March, and the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) decided it wouldn’t be replaced. Instead, the plan was to demolish it completely to clear the way for future upgrades related to the I-94/M-3 interchange.

It seems the necessary heavy equipment needed for the job is stuck in an area that is currently dealing with seasonal weight restrictions. Impact on Traffic
