Emergency crews respond to multiple car accidents and a shocking case of arson in Detroit over the weekend.
Over the weekend, Detroit faced a series of serious traffic incidents, including a car fire on I-94 and a tragic collision in Sterling Heights, resulting in multiple injuries. Furthermore, a shocking case of arson involving a suspect and two trapped women has raised concerns about safety in the area. As investigations continue, our thoughts are with the victims and their recovery.
Detroit has been shaken up over the weekend with several traffic accidents and a shocking act of arson that have left multiple people injured. If you were driving around Detroit this weekend, you probably noticed some pretty significant disruptions on our roads, and for good reason!
On Friday morning, drivers on I-94 heading west encountered major headaches when a car caught fire on the shoulder. This incident quickly drew a response from multiple emergency crews, all trying to tackle the chaos. Traffic came to a crawl, dropping to a snail-like pace of just 4 mph in some places as only the far left lane remained open for cars to get by. Now, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that when a car fire causes that much disruption, a lot of frustrated drivers are going to be out and about. Details about the causes behind the crash and the fire are still a bit hazy, but we can say this: It was a stressful morning for many!
Then, just a day later on Saturday night, another serious accident took place in nearby Sterling Heights. Around 6:30 p.m., two vehicles collided at the intersection of 18 Mile Road and Pickett Ridge. One of the vehicles, an eye-catching orange Mustang, lost control and smashed into a silver Ram pickup truck. Sadly, the crash led to a fierce fire, and quick-thinking witnesses sprang into action to help rescue those trapped inside before the flames could escalate.
Four people were hospitalized as a result of this terrifying incident. Among the injured, two 17-year-olds in the Mustang are in critical condition, while the two 25-year-olds in the Ram truck are expected to recover. Witness Ameer Hameed reported hearing a loud noise from his garage, which prompted him and his neighbors to rush to help escape those caught in the wreckage. While weather conditions are being pointed to as a contributing factor for this accident, authorities have ruled out alcohol and drug use.
As if the weekend couldn’t get any wilder, local law enforcement was called to an unsettling scene on Monday morning when a suspect allegedly set a car ablaze with two women inside. This incident occurred on the 1000 block of Grand Boulevard. The suspect, recently fired from his job, has been identified as Roberto Romero. He reportedly viewed the two women, aged 50 and 57, as tied up in his employment issues and rather sadly, took to drastic measures.
Romero allegedly used gasoline, cleverly contained in a ketchup bottle, to ignite the vehicle while the women were trapped inside, inflicting serious burn injuries to their upper bodies. As flames engulfed the car, the victims were immediately transported to the hospital in serious condition, facing a long road to recovery ahead.
Even though Romero fled the scene, he was pursued and detained by a witness until police arrived. Facing serious charges, including two counts of assault with intent to murder, Romero’s history paints a troubling picture. He has faced previous assaults and threats involving a butcher knife and a bike chain and was on probation at the time of the attack. When taken to court, he made it clear he only wanted to speak to one specific news outlet and refused legal representation.
These recent events remind us of how unpredictable life can be, and how quickly things can change on our roads. As investigations continue, our thoughts are with those affected by the accidents and the victims of this horrific act of arson. Detroit, let’s stay vigilant on the roads and support one another in recovering from these incidents!
