A report from January 2024 revealed a record increase in child homelessness across Detroit, with the Point-in-Time count recording 455 children experiencing homelessness. Data from the Detroit Public Schools indicated that approximately 1 in 19 students experienced homelessness during the 2022-2023 school year, significantly more than double the rate from 2019 to 2020.

On average, families must wait 130 days for shelter, while unaccompanied youth face waits of around 50 days. Although overall homelessness has been declining in the city since it peaked at 2,597 in 2015, the number of unsheltered children has tragically tripled over the past three years. The increase in homelessness aligns with soaring housing costs, as rents for single-family homes in Detroit have surged by 55% since 2017.
