Bus stop in Detroit with safety signs

News Summary

A tragic incident in Detroit has led to the deaths of two pedestrians waiting at a bus stop, resulting in charges against 33-year-old Dejah Latre Berry. The crash occurred on April 25, 2025, when Berry’s SUV veered into the bus stop, injuring the victims who later succumbed to their injuries. Berry faces multiple charges, and community concerns about traffic safety are mounting as the investigation continues.

Detroit – A 33-year-old woman from Detroit has been charged after a tragic crash that resulted in the deaths of two pedestrians waiting at a bus stop. The incident occurred on Friday, April 25, 2025, at approximately 6:45 p.m. near the intersection of Evergreen Road and Fenkell Avenue.

Dejah Latre Berry was reportedly driving a gray SUV southbound on Evergreen at a high rate of speed when she lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer into the northbound lanes. The SUV struck two individuals who were waiting at a bus stop, leaving them with life-threatening injuries. The victims, identified as Kwasi Agbottah, aged 43, and Elizabeth Agbottah, aged 41, were transported to a nearby hospital, where they later succumbed to their injuries.

After colliding with the bus stop, Berry’s SUV continued on its path and crashed into another vehicle parked at a BP gas station situated at the same intersection. Following the incident, the Wayne County Prosecutor, Kym L. Worthy, announced that Berry faces two counts of reckless driving causing death and two counts of driving with a license suspended, revoked, or denied causing death. If convicted, each count could result in a maximum of 15 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.

Berry was arraigned on Monday in the 36th District Court in Detroit, where her bond was set at $50,000. A bond re-determination hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Wednesday, with a probable cause conference planned for May 7.

The prosecution highlighted the serious nature of the charges against Berry, emphasizing the loss of two innocent lives as a direct outcome of the alleged reckless driving. This tragic incident has raised concerns in the community regarding traffic safety and the consequences of driving recklessly.

Investigators are continuing to gather evidence and more details about the crash are expected to be released by the Detroit Police Fatal Squad Unit in the coming weeks. The collision not only took the lives of the Agbottahs but also serves as a grim reminder of the potential dangers of high-speed driving in urban areas, particularly near public transport locations.

Traffic incidents involving pedestrians can often have severe consequences, particularly in busy city environments like Detroit. As authorities continue to investigate this case, the community is left mourning the loss of two lives and concerned for the safety of its roadways.

Motorists are urged to drive responsibly and adhere to speed limits, especially near bus stops and other pedestrian-heavy areas. This incident underscores the vital importance of traffic adherence to prevent further tragedies in the future.
