All proceeds from the evening will go directly toward supporting the Ground Up Initiative. This ambitious program is dedicated to tackling critical issues such as affordable housing, providing mentorship, and offering tailored programming for young adults navigating transitions from foster care, incarceration, and homelessness. This initiative reflects a growing commitment to foster community empowerment and self-reliance.
Since BLAC’s formation in 2020, over $500,000 has been funneled into revitalizing Detroit neighborhoods, showing that meaningful differences can indeed come from dedicated efforts. The coalition’s initiatives, which include restoring properties to create stable living conditions and enhancing community well-being through events like the Health Is Wealth Detroit expo, are undeniably changing the fabric of the city.
Remarkably, BLAC emerged as a direct response to violence that has plagued the Detroit community. The heart-wrenching loss of a friend in 2010 was a pivotal moment that sparked Dexter Sullivan and others into action. Now, as the gala draws near, it will also honor impactful Black leaders from the community during the Black History Makers celebration, recognizing their incredible contributions.

The Conservatory Ballroom, now elegantly restored, will serve as the venue for guests to enjoy a delightful reception, participate in a silent auction, and savor a scrumptious full-course meal—all to the soothing sounds of live jazz music. BLAC has further established the Ali Legacy House and its women’s counterpart, providing essential stable housing support for young adults aged 18-35. Those living in these homes enjoy amenities like the enchanting Tranquility Garden, housing over 150 fruit-bearing plants, reflecting the coalition’s commitment to wellness.
Participants in BLAC’s mentorship programs have a chance to engage in various supportive frameworks, focusing on everything from personal development to career readiness. The annual “Black History Makers” awards further recognize local Detroiters working hard to create impactful change.
Additionally, the vision includes the establishment of a Black Legacy Advancement Center. This multifaceted space will encompass not only housing but commercial environments and community services, fostering entrepreneurship and professional skill-building amongst residents. The hope is to create a network of revitalized homes and businesses—not just in Detroit, but extending across various cities in the U.S.
The Ground Up Project has already recorded a win by purchasing and renovating a home in LaSalle Gardens, now known as the Ali Legacy House, all focused on nurturing young Black male entrepreneurs. Residents benefit from affordable housing arrangements while gaining invaluable mentorship.
As BLAC embarks on constructing a commercial incubator on Linwood Avenue, the commitment to rejuvenating community entrepreneurship remains strong. The gala promises to be a significant stepping stone towards combating systemic challenges while embracing collective progress.
