News Summary

Detroit drivers should prepare for disruptions this weekend as I-94 will be closed from 8 p.m. on March 28, 2025, for the demolition of the McClellan Avenue overpass. The closure will affect both directions between I-75 and Gratiot Avenue and is expected to last until 5 a.m. on March 31, 2025. While some detours are in place, all entrance ramps within the affected areas will also be closed. These actions are part of broader infrastructure improvements aimed at addressing aging road conditions.

Attention Detroit Drivers: Weekend I-94 Closure for Bridge Demolition

Attention all residents and visitors of Detroit! This weekend is going to bring some big changes to your daily commute. For those who rely on Interstate 94, mark your calendars because starting at 8 p.m. on Friday, March 28, 2025, I-94 will be closed for bridge demolition. Yes, you heard that right! The McClellan Avenue overpass is coming down, and it’s going to impact several routes in and around the city.

What This Means for Your Weekend Plans

The closure will stretch between I-75 and Gratiot Avenue (M-3), and make no mistake, both directions of I-94 will be closed throughout the weekend. If you think you’ll be heading that way, it’s best to plan an alternate route. The good news? All lanes are expected to reopen promptly by 5 a.m. on Monday, March 31, 2025. So, whether you’re heading to work or planning a weekend getaway, you won’t be long delayed!

Why Is the Bridge Coming Down?

The McClellan Avenue overpass has been standing since 1957, but its time has come. It was closed back in March 2024 due to poor structural conditions — yikes! While bridges may have a long history, they also need to be safe for everyone using them. The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has decided not to replace this overpass; instead, they’re focusing on future upgrades at the I-94/M-3 (Gratiot Avenue) interchange. So while it might feel a little inconvenient now, there’s a bigger plan in the works!

Detours You Need to Know

For those whose routes intersect with I-94 this weekend, here’s what you need to know:

  • Westbound I-94 traffic will be detoured via southbound M-3 and then northbound I-75, leading back to westbound I-94.
  • Eastbound I-94 traffic should take the southbound I-75 route and then switch to northbound M-3 back to eastbound I-94.

But that’s not all! All entrance ramps to westbound I-94 from Cadieux Road to M-3 will be closed. On the eastbound side, all entrance ramps from West Grand Boulevard to Van Dyke Avenue (M-53) will also be shut down. You have been warned! All of these ramps will remain closed until that bright Monday morning.

Ongoing Infrastructure Improvements

This demolition is just one part of the ongoing infrastructure improvements happening in and around Detroit. The city is making strides to address poor structural conditions on aging infrastructure. While it might be a hassle for a couple of days, these efforts will prepare and enhance the roads we all use every day.

Stay Updated and Be Safe!

So, stay tuned and keep your ears open for any updates as this weekend approaches. The MDOT is working hard to ensure everything goes smoothly, but it’s always good to be prepared! Remember to give yourself extra time for your travels, follow detour signs, and let’s keep our roads safe for everyone!

Drive safely, Detroit, and we’ll see you back on the road come Monday!
