Mayor Duggan’s Final State of the City Address Ahead

News Summary

Detroit is abuzz with excitement as Mayor Mike Duggan prepares for his final State of the City address on March 25 at the Hudson’s site. This address marks a significant moment as Duggan has served since 2014 and is moving towards the Michigan governor’s race in 2026. Meanwhile, the Hudson’s development promises to revitalize downtown with new office spaces, luxury hotels, and retail spaces, bringing economic growth and job opportunities to the city.

Exciting Times Ahead for Detroit as Mayor Duggan Prepares for Final Address

Detroit is buzzing with anticipation as Mayor Mike Duggan gears up to deliver his final State of the City address on March 25th at 7 p.m. This special event will take place at the future Hudson’s development site, marking the very first large-scale gathering at this highly anticipated location. It’s a significant moment for the city, given that Mayor Duggan has served since 2014 and is now eyeing a new adventure as an independent candidate for Michigan governor in 2026.

A Grand Development at Hudson’s

The Hudson’s Woodward Avenue development is a game changer for Detroit, featuring the second tallest building in Michigan, soaring to an impressive 685 feet. This stunning skyscraper will soon house the new General Motors Global Headquarters, adding a modern touch to the city skyline. But that’s not all; the development also includes plans for a luxurious five-star hotel, sleek condominiums, vibrant retail space, and ample event spaces.

For many Detroiters, the name Hudson’s holds a special place in their hearts. The original department store, known fondly as “the Big Store,” occupied the same block for decades before closing its doors in 1983. For nearly 40 years following its closure, this area became a “huge dead spot” in downtown, lacking the lively atmosphere that the city so desperately needed.

Breathing New Life into Downtown

The Hudson’s development is part of a larger initiative by Bedrock Detroit, which has been actively revitalizing the downtown area. This project is just one of four developments to receive a whopping $618 million Transformational Brownfield incentive, aimed at flipping the script on underutilized land in the city. Additionally, the development will enjoy a city tax abatement valued at $60 million over a decade.

As construction progresses, it’s exciting to note that the project is expected to create around 2,000 full-time-equivalent jobs, providing a much-needed boost to the local economy. The final glass panel was recently installed on the tower’s exterior, completing the building’s sleek façade. This is quite the achievement, considering the construction team had to navigate various hurdles, including the removal of old underground parking and addressing challenges related to the previous Hudson’s foundation.

What to Expect from Hudson’s Detroit

Spanning a massive 1.5 million square feet, the final Hudson’s Detroit project will include office space, high-end retail, a luxury hotel under the EDITION brand, elegant residential condominiums, a public plaza, and large event spaces. The development consists of an eye-catching 12-story office building paired with a stunning 45-floor hotel and residential tower, which will offer sweeping views of the Detroit skyline.

Excitingly, General Motors plans to lease four floors in the 12-story office block, with their teams expected to make the move by late 2025 or early 2026. The office building is slated for completion in April 2025, just in time for retail tenants to begin their operations that summer. Meanwhile, the skyscraper is anticipated to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2025.

Plans for Revitalization Continue

While the Hudson project has encountered its fair share of scrutiny regarding its timeline, the city remains committed to exploring options that enhance the overall landscape of Detroit, including plans for the Renaissance Center as part of ongoing revitalization efforts. The Downtown Development Authority has even granted a one-year extension on the development agreement deadline, allowing for a meticulous approach to the project.

In a testament to the scale of the build, the installation of each glass panel has been an engineering marvel. These panels range from 11 to 16 feet tall and weigh up to an astonishing 2,200 pounds each. A total of 4,677 panels have been fitted, adding a touch of brilliance to the skyline.

As Mayor Duggan prepares to present his final vision for the city, there is a shared sense of hope among Detroiters that this development will instill a renewed sense of wonder and pride. The journey ahead may be filled with challenges, but Detroit is ready to embrace the future.
