A vision of the future for the Detroit People Mover, highlighting community engagement and transit improvements.
Plans are underway to revamp Detroit’s People Mover transit system through an $800,000 Downtown Mobility Study. This study will evaluate possible enhancements and gather community feedback over the next year, while also seeking funding through public-private partnerships. Currently, the People Mover operates a 2.9-mile loop, serving 13 stations, and is free until 2025. With over 1 million riders by the end of 2024, the initiative aims to modernize this vital transit system.
Exciting times are ahead for the city of Detroit as plans are underway to study potential improvements for the much-beloved People Mover transit system. This $800,000 initiative, officially titled the Downtown Mobility Study or People Mover System Plan, is set to kick off next month and will run for approximately 12 months.
This ambitious study is made possible by a combination of federal and state grants. By investing in research targeted at enhancing their transit methods, city officials hope to ultimately make commuting easier and more efficient for everyone. The overall goal is to assess various possible improvements, not only through adding new stations but also looking at potential expansions of the current system.
At the heart of the study, conducted by the firm AECOM Great Lakes, lies the valuable goal of evaluating changes that could benefit the transit system. Interestingly, the study will not be recommending specific projects at this time. Instead, it focuses on gathering information to weigh the pros and cons of various improvements.
Part of the ongoing dialogue is also about the importance of forming public-private partnerships for funding any expansions. Since these could run into the millions, collaboration with private stakeholders will be crucial in getting future projects off the ground.
The voices of the community play an essential role! Over the next year, the city will actively seek feedback from both the Detroit City Council and the general public. Engaging with residents offers invaluable insights and ensures that any changes align with the needs of the community.
Currently, the People Mover operates along a 2.9-mile loop in the heart of downtown, connecting riders to 13 different stations. As a cherry on top, riding the People Mover is free until the end of 2025, thanks to generous corporate sponsorships. It’s a win-win situation, enticing more people to hop on board!
Notably, a recent survey found that 90% of riders in 2024 were satisfied with their experience on the network. However, the focus remains on attracting non-users and ensuring the system meets a diverse set of commuter needs. The study will look into both short-term and long-term improvements that could enhance the overall system.
The scope of the study spans a 7.2 square-mile area, taking into account neighborhood requirements around downtown. Smaller changes could be on the horizon, such as improving station accessibility and installing better signage to assist riders.
There are also ongoing discussions related to the impact of the upcoming Renaissance Center redevelopment on the People Mover station located there, indicating that future upgrades will consider environmental factors as well.
The last significant upgrade to the People Mover took place in 1987, making this study a welcome update for a system in need of modernization. With outdated trains and parts, strides have already been made to secure refurbished trains from Toronto’s transit system, as well as a recent board approval for a $1.2 million purchase to obtain up to 18 replacement trains!
Additionally, a $5 million maintenance project funded through state and federal grants has already upgraded 20% of the People Mover tracks. By the end of 2025, the study also aims to explore available funding avenues for proposed changes and enhancements.
With the People Mover surpassing the milestone of 1 million riders as of December 4, 2024, it’s clear that this transit system is a vital component in the ongoing evolution of public transportation in Detroit. As stakeholders, including major property owners and developers, continue to engage in the study, the future looks bright for Detroit’s People Mover!
