Detroit police officers fostering community engagement and support.
Todd Bettison has taken charge as the new chief of the Detroit Police Department, aiming to set new standards in law enforcement. His plans include improving officer training, enhancing community engagement, and implementing innovative policing strategies using technology. With a focus on addressing crime dynamics and persistent challenges, Bettison hopes to transform the DPD into a model agency that serves the community effectively. His journey within the department, coupled with insights from his time as deputy mayor, positions him for significant change in Detroit’s policing landscape.
Detroit, a city known for its resilience and spirit, has embarked on an exciting new chapter in its policing with Todd Bettison stepping in as the chief of the Detroit Police Department (DPD). Following a long and dedicated career within the department and the mayor’s office, Bettison is ready to roll up his sleeves and transform the DPD into the best-ranked law enforcement agency it has ever been.
Having joined the DPD back in 1994 as a patrol officer, Bettison’s journey has seen him climb through the ranks with impressive speed. Just five years in, he was made a sergeant, and within a year after that, he became a lieutenant. He eventually reached the position of first assistant chief. Now, stepping into the chief’s role, he is eager to set new standards and leave a legacy of excellence.
In recent discussions, Bettison has shared his vision for the DPD, which includes creating an environment where officers are well-trained and high closure rates for homicides become the norm. He acknowledges the troubled history of homicide rates in Detroit, particularly noting the challenges faced before the city’s bankruptcy. His goal is clear: transform the current state into a shining example of effective policing that serves the community faithfully.
Bettison’s experience as a deputy mayor has instilled in him the importance of community involvement in policing. He has previously advocated for significant raises for police officers to ensure they feel valued and motivated. His community violence intervention (CVI) plan aims to bolster programs that support both law enforcement and community relations, steering away from an adversarial ‘us vs. them’ mentality.
In his push for a well-rounded approach, Bettison has established hotspot policing strategies backed by crime analytics. This initiative zeros in on historically violent areas, designated as “CVI zones,” ensuring that resources are focused where they are needed most. Out of 25 community groups that sought contracts, six were selected for their proven ability to effectively reduce crime rates, emphasizing the need for relatable messengers who can connect with younger individuals.
Bettison has a keen understanding of crime dynamics in Detroit, noting that current gang activities have shifted focus from typical drug-related crimes to more contemporary issues such as credit card fraud. Rather than traditional gangs, the DPD is now dealing with individual cliques involved in a variety of criminal activities, prompting a need for tailored policing strategies.
Technology is playing a pivotal role in Detroit’s crime-fighting efforts. The city’s crime analysis center is impressively larger than New York’s, utilizing advanced technology and partnerships such as Project Green Light. This initiative connects over 1,000 surveillance camera locations directly to the DPD, significantly enhancing crime prevention and suspect identification capabilities.
Despite the advancements, challenges remain. Bettison has identified issues such as burglary and motor vehicle theft as ongoing problems that need addressing. However, he expressed optimism that the DPD is now fully staffed—an achievement that hasn’t happened in a while—making it an attractive place for officers looking to rejoin.
With his wealth of experience, innovative ideas, and community-focused strategies, Todd Bettison is on a mission to rewrite the narrative of policing in Detroit. As he embarks on this new journey, the city waits curiously to see how these changes unfold and how the DPD transforms into a model of law enforcement excellence.
