Detroit is in a state of sorrow following the unexpected passing of Luther Keith, a pioneering Black journalist, activist, and talented blues musician. His death on March 5 at the age of 74 came just hours after he captured the hearts of many with a performance at Baker’s Keyboard Lounge in his hometown. Luther was a cherished figure in local circles, known not just for his artistry but for the powerful impact he had on journalism and community activism.
Born in 1950 into an iconic civil rights family, Keith had a unique legacy, being the nephew of renowned federal Judge Damon Keith, who made significant strides in civil rights rulings. Luther’s journey in journalism began in 1969 at The Detroit News, where he started in the circulation department while pursuing his degree. He completed his education at the University of Detroit in 1972, marking a significant milestone in his career as the first Black sportswriter at a major daily newspaper in Detroit.
Over the years, Luther shattered barriers as he became the first Black editor at The Detroit News and the first Black Lansing correspondent—making his name the very first Black name to appear on the newspaper’s prestigious masthead. His groundbreaking work was marked by a strong commitment to diversity in journalism, leading him to establish the Journalism Institute for Minorities at Wayne State University in the 1980s. This initiative aimed at recruiting, training, and mentoring aspiring journalists of color, offering scholarships and job opportunities that would help uplift future generations in the field.
Keith’s influence didn’t stop at journalism. In 2005, he embarked on a new journey by founding ARISE Detroit!, a nonprofit organization focused on tackling pressing community issues such as crime and poverty. His heart for activism was recognized and celebrated by various leaders in the community, highlighting how he dedicated his life to amplifying the often overlooked voices in the media landscape.
In addition to his journalism and activism, Luther was also a passionate blues musician. Adopting the stage name Badman, he picked up the guitar in 1980 after being inspired by a performance from legendary blues artist Luther Allison. Keith regularly performed at local clubs throughout Detroit, and his love for music shone through in every strum of his guitar. This passion for blues enriched the local music scene and connected him with his community in profound ways.
His daughter, Erin, reflected on her father’s incredible legacy, emphasizing the importance of helping others—a value that was fundamental to Luther’s spirit. With an impressive career spanning over three decades, Luther received numerous accolades for his journalism and was rightfully inducted into the Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame in 1995. He was not merely a recipient of awards; he was a mentor whose friendly demeanor and vibrant personality left an indelible mark on the lives of those he encountered.

Funeral services for this beloved figure were scheduled at Fellowship Chapel in Detroit, featuring visitation followed by burial at Woodlawn Cemetery.
