The community is encouraged to support each other during this challenging time.

Mid-Michigan Faces Power Outages as Storms Roar Through

Good day to our readers in Mid-Michigan! This morning, March 15, thousands of residents woke up to a rather shocking surprise—darkness! Following a wave of severe storms accompanied by powerful winds, around 14,000 customers found themselves without electricity. Let’s dive into what unfolded and what’s in store for the next few days.

Storm Overview

On Saturday morning, as the storms rolled in, many homeowners quickly realized they were without power as strong winds kicked up to astonishing speeds. As of 1 p.m., the Consumers Energy Outage Map provided a heart-stopping update, confirming that roughly 14,024 homes and businesses across the region were affected by outages.

Areas Affected

Notably, approximately 4,028 customers in and around St. Charles, which is located southwest of Saginaw, bore the brunt of these outages. Other areas experiencing power disruptions included:

  • 735 customers east of Mount Pleasant
  • 1,341 customers just north of Lansing
  • Furthermore, 3,711 homes and businesses reported outages in the Belding area, about 12 miles northwest of Ionia.

In addition, DTE Energy wasn’t off the hook either, reporting that 1,380 customers were facing similar challenges in the Metro Detroit area.

Weather Woes

The storm brought with it strong but non-severe weather, featuring some pea-sized hail that seemed to add insult to injury. To make matters worse, forecasts indicated that the strong winds would continue well into Saturday evening, which raised concerns about additional outages. With wind gusts predicted to reach between 45 mph and 50 mph, the National Weather Service issued a wind advisory for almost all counties in the state.

Specifically, areas such as Grand Traverse County, Leelanau County, Benzie County, and Manistee County were under a high wind warning until 8 p.m. Saturday, keeping everyone on high alert.

Safety Precautions

The strong winds are known to be ruthless, potentially knocking down branches and sending unsecured objects flying, which could easily lead to localized power outages. Therefore, it’s critical for residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary risks during these tumultuous weather conditions.

When Can We Expect Power Back?

For those left in the dark, there’s a glimmer of hope on the horizon! Consumers Energy has indicated that they are working hard to ensure power is restored to many customers by Sunday morning. However, with ongoing wind conditions, it’s understandable if everyone keeps an eye on updates from the utility service. Hopefully, we will all see the lights come back on sooner rather than later!

Community Spirit Shines Bright

As we face these stormy challenges together, this is a wonderful opportunity for neighbors to check in on one another. If you know someone nearby who may need assistance during this time, lend a helping hand! After all, Mid-Michigan has always shown a resilient and caring spirit in the face of adverse weather conditions.

Stay safe, everyone! Remember to secure any outdoor items that may get swept away and keep your windows locked. We’ll keep you updated as the situation unfolds and hope for brighter days ahead!
