The NKU Lady Norse celebrating their impressive win against Detroit Mercy.
The NKU Lady Norse achieved a resounding victory against Detroit Mercy, showcasing their strong performance on the court. With standout plays from Macey Blevins and Abby Wolterman, the team surged ahead early and maintained control throughout the game. The final score marked a comfortable lead for NKU, improving their record to 8-15 overall and 5-7 in conference play. This win sets a positive tone as they prepare for their upcoming matchup against Wright State.
In the lively city of Highland Heights, Kentucky, the NKU Lady Norse were all smiles as they took on the Detroit Mercy Titans on Wednesday night. Both teams entered the court looking to bounce back from recent defeats, each suffering double-digit losses in their last games. But whatever tension loomed over the matchup quickly turned into excitement, particularly for NKU’s Macey Blevins, who was just 22 points away from hitting the 1,000-point milestone in her career.
The game kicked off with NKU winning the tip-off and immediately making their presence felt. Blevins struck first with a sharp three-pointer, putting her team ahead early. Abby Wolterman quickly followed suit, adding a layup and two free throws, extending the Lady Norse’s lead to 7-0. While Aaliyah McQueen of Detroit Mercy managed to score with a mid-range jumper to break the momentum, NKU wasn’t deterred. They responded with back-to-back baskets from Wolterman and Mya Meredith, already pushing their lead to 11-4 by the first media timeout.
Coming out of the timeout, Jaci Jones’ impressive three-pointer sent the NKU crowd into a frenzy, increasing their lead to double digits. Although Anna Lassan attempted to rally Detroit Mercy with a score, the Lady Norse were on fire, going on an incredible 15-0 run. This included three sizzling three-pointers from Jones, wrapping up the first quarter with a staggering score of 29-6.
The second quarter saw the Titans try to regroup, with Alize Tripp eventually breaking NKU’s run with a layup. Yet, the Lady Norse continued to flex their muscle, trading baskets and maintaining a comfy lead. A three-pointer from Halle Idowu launched NKU’s margin past 20 points, and even though Myonna Hooper of Detroit Mercy attempted to cut into the lead with another three, NKU exploded once again — this time with a 10-0 run — to make the score 42-11 at the second media timeout.
Detroit Mercy tried to make a comeback, capitalizing on free throws from Lassan and a layup from Kailey Starks, but at halftime, NKU was comfortably ahead, leading 48-20.
The second half began with Blevins adding a layup to keep the momentum rolling for the Lady Norse. The teams exchanged baskets while Detroit Mercy worked hard to close the gap, but by the end of the third quarter, NKU found themselves comfortably in the lead, setting the score at 62-33. Throughout the game, Detroit Mercy struggled with their shooting, finishing with a dismal three-point shooting percentage of just 10%.
As the fourth quarter progressed, both teams found themselves in a free-throw showdown due to several fouls. It wasn’t just the defense that shone for NKU — Idowu and Wolterman combined for a remarkable 30 points and 18 rebounds, leading their team through a stunning victory. With this win, NKU improved to an overall record of 8-15 and 5-7 in conference play.
This victory was not just a morale booster, but it also sets the stage as they prepare to take on Wright State this Saturday at the Nutter Center in Fairborn, Ohio. Fans and supporters couldn’t be more excited to see how the Lady Norse continue to build their momentum after such a magnificent performance!
