Dark storm clouds gathering over Southeast Michigan indicating severe weather

News Summary

Residents of Southeast Michigan should prepare for severe storms forecasted for Wednesday night, including heavy rain, damaging winds, and potential tornadoes. DTE has issued storm safety reminders and is ready to respond to possible outages. With rain accumulations reaching up to 3 inches, local flooding is a concern, prompting authorities to remind residents to avoid downed power lines and flooded roads. Stay informed and prepared as storm safety is a top priority.

Severe Storms Set to Hit Southeast Michigan

Attention, folks in Southeast Michigan! Brace yourselves because Mother Nature has some serious plans for us this Wednesday night. That’s right—the National Weather Service is predicting severe storms that could bring heavy downpours, damaging winds, and even the possibility of tornadoes. So, grab your umbrellas and hunker down as we dive into what you need to know to stay safe!

Storm Safety First

With storms brewing, DTE is stepping up and providing some essential storm safety reminders. During a press conference led by Brian Calka, the Vice President of Distribution Operations, it was made clear that DTE crews are poised and ready to tackle any outages that might pop up due to the rough weather. Their main concern? The heavy rainfall rather than ice or snow that’s expected to roll in over Metro Detroit.

This rain isn’t just a sprinkle; it could accumulate to a whopping 1 to 2 inches, and in certain areas, we might even see localized totals exceed 3 inches by Thursday morning. Now that’s some serious precipitation! With the ground expected to soften under that deluge, it poses a risk for fallen trees and downed power lines. Talk about a perfect storm of woes!

Staying Clear of Danger

Residents are strongly urged to stay away from their yards and maintain a safe distance of at least one bus length (about 25 feet) from any downed power lines. Remember, those lines are live and dangerous—definitely something you want to avoid! DTE will be marking off these areas with yellow caution tape, so don’t cross that tape. Just steer clear!

Generator Safety

If you’ve got a portable generator, keep in mind that it should *never* be used inside homes or businesses due to the deadly threat of carbon monoxide emissions. Your safety is paramount, so follow these guidelines!

When Trouble Strikes: Reporting and Resources

Should you find yourself facing outages or spotting downed wires, you can report these issues through DTE’s app or website, or you can give them a call at 800-477-4747. They’re ready to assist as our brave linemen work to restore power and keep our communities running smoothly.

Flood Watches Are in Effect

Speaking of power, keep in mind that flood watches will be in effect for counties including Lenawee, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, St. Clair, Washtenaw, and Wayne from 8 p.m. on Wednesday to 8 a.m. on Thursday. It’s crucial to be aware of potential flooding, especially as storms are expected to hit right before the evening commute. You don’t want to be caught off guard!

Road Safety and Precautions

For those drivers out there, we advise steering clear of flooded roads. Remember the old saying: “turn around, don’t drown.” It’s always safer to find another way than to risk a hazardous drive. The Great Lakes Water Authority has assured us their infrastructure is ready, but if you live in flood-prone areas, take extra precautions. Make sure your downspouts are directing water away from your house, and it might be a good idea to avoid running dishwashers or washing machines during the storms.

Stay Updated and Be Prepared

It’s always a good idea to stay informed, so keep an eye on local forecasts for updates. Now’s the time to prepare your emergency plans with your family, just in case we face any challenges from the storm.

So, Michiganders, let’s stay safe out there! Stay tuned, stay cautious, and let’s weather this storm together!
