A picturesque winter landscape capturing the chill of March in Southeast Michigan.
As March arrives, Southeast Michigan experiences a sudden drop in temperature, with daytime highs remaining in the 20s and nighttime lows plunging into the teens. Wind chills will make it feel even colder. The weekend forecast shows a mix of sunshine and scattered clouds while the following week brings a warm front, transitioning to milder temperatures and rain. Residents are advised to bundle up and stay warm as fluctuating weather continues throughout the month, offering both chilly and pleasantly warmer days ahead.
As we step into March, folks in Southeast Michigan are waking up to a sudden plunge in temperatures, taking a sharp turn from the warmth we felt just a day before. February wrapped up with a comfortable high of 55 degrees at Metro Airport, but now, it’s time to bundle up!
Early Saturday morning greeted us with chilly temperatures lingering in the 30s, but don’t let that fool you—daytime highs climbed nowhere near what we’d like, only hovering around the 20s. And as Saturday night falls, the forecast shows the thermometer dropping further into the teens. Metro Detroit is expected to chill down to about 16 degrees, while our friends in Ann Arbor and the Thumb might find themselves facing lows between 10 to 14 degrees.
With northwesterly winds blowing at 5 to 15 mph, it’s going to feel even colder. Those nighttime wind chills in Detroit will make it feel like 10 degrees, and in some areas west of I-275 and north of I-696, it may even dip into the single digits! So, if you’re heading out, don’t forget your warmest coat and maybe even a hot drink to keep your spirits up.
As we roll into Sunday, the chill is far from gone, but at least we can expect some shining moments. Though it will remain cold, the skies will be mostly sunny with some scattered clouds. Morning wind chills will keep those frigid vibes alive—feeling like the teens or even lower for Metro Detroit early on. The afternoon is looking a bit better with highs creeping up to the lower 30s, but don’t forget those wind chills that will still make it feel like the lower to mid-20s.
With winds blowing in from the west-northwest at 5 to 10 mph, it’s a good idea to stay warm and keep your hat on tight! As night approaches, expect partly cloudy skies and temperatures settling in the upper teens to around 20 degrees.
Monday is bringing a little relief with a warm front that promises to introduce milder air into the region. The day will begin with mostly sunny patches, but clouds will start creeping in as the day rolls on. Expect highs around 40 degrees, which feels much more like March! But keep your umbrella handy for Monday night, as the forecast hints at sprinkles or flurries, with lows dipping into the lower 30s.
By Tuesday, it’s looking like we’ll really kick things up a notch. Morning showers will kick off the day, turning into more consistent rain by evening. Highs are forecasted to hover around the mid-40s to 50 degrees, while nighttime temperatures will settle in the comfortable lower to mid-40s. Finally, it seems that spring is giving us a nod!
Wednesday will keep the warming trend going as a low-pressure system develops across the Great Lakes, bringing stronger rain and gusty winds our way with projected highs in the mid-50s. With potential rain and snow on the horizon for Wednesday night, lows will be a bit erratic, fluctuating from the mid-20s to 30 degrees.
Despite the chilly start, Thursday is expected to be mostly cloudy with a chance of flurries, but highs should bounce back to a more tolerable 35 to 40 degrees. In the bigger picture, March doesn’t seem to warrant significantly below-normal temperatures, presenting an equal opportunity for above- or below-normal temperatures. Keep your fingers crossed for a bit of sunshine amidst the rain, as conditions lean toward above-normal precipitation throughout the month.
Stay warm, Southeast Michigan! We’ve got a rollercoaster of weather to enjoy this March!
